Pediatric Radiology is the application of diagnostic imaging to aid in the understanding, diagnosis, therapy, and follow-up of diseases of infants and children. As in adults, a variety of different imaging technologies are used to allow the radiologist to visualize what is going on inside the body of a child, and thereby assist in their clinical care. These modalities include plain film radiography (conventional x-rays), contrast examinations (e.g. upper GI series, barium enemas, and voiding cystourethrograms or VCUGs), ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and isotope scanning (nuclear medicine). The choice of examination depends primarily upon the nature of the problem, the anatomic region of concern, the age and condition of the child, and the availability of services at the facility where the exam is performed. Every attempt is made to conduct exams in a caring and supportive environment, with an eye toward maximizing patient safety and comfort, and minimizing radiation exposure during the procedure.

Pediatric Radiology services at RAA are administered under the direction and supervision of a Board-certified diagnostic radiologist. Daniel A. Ichel, MD, is Board Certified in Diagnostic Radiology, with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Pediatric Radiology from the American Board of Radiology. In addition he completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at the nationally renowned Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He has special interest and expertise in all facets of Pediatric Imaging, including Pediatric Neuroimaging and Nuclear Medicine.
