Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging exam used to create detailed images of the breast. Mammography uses low dose x-ray; high contrast, high-resolution film; and, an x-ray system designed specifically for imaging the breasts. Mammography plays a major role in early detection of breast cancers. The US Food and Drug Administration reports that mammography detects approximately 85% of all breast cancers and can detect cancer several years before a lump can be felt.
Will it hurt?
The quality of your mammogram greatly depends on the compression of the breast. This allows the breast to flatten so that all of the tissue can be seen in the x-ray. The discomfort of the compression is brief, and is not harmful to your breast. If you feel significant pain, please let your technologist know. You may want to schedule your exam during those times of your menstrual cycle when your breasts are least tender.
How do I prepare for a mammogram?
You should wear a two-piece outfit the day of your exam so you will only need to remove your top. Don't use deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or near your breasts that day as they may cause artifacts on the x-ray.
How long does a mammogram take?
If you are having a screening mammogram, the exam itself should take about 15 minutes. Diagnostic mammograms take about 30 minutes to complete.
When do I need to get a mammogram?
The American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology recommend that, beginning by age 40, you should have a screening mammogram and a doctor's examination of your breasts every year.
Do I need a referral for a mammogram?
Normally, referrals are not needed for women over 40 scheduling a screening mammogram. We do need the name of your primary physician to whom the radiology report can be sent. Diagnostic mammograms are performed when an abnormalities are found on a screening mammogram; or, if a woman has a complaint or symptom. Diagnostic mammograms require a physician referral.
